Battery disposal

Here you will find important information about the proper disposal of batteries and rechargeable batteries.

Do not dispose of batteries in household waste Batteries and rechargeable batteries must not be disposed of with household waste.
Where can batteries be disposed of?

Used batteries and rechargeable batteries can be returned free of charge to municipal collection points, recycling centres or suitable retail take-back points.

Many supermarkets, drugstores, electronics stores and other retail outlets provide collection boxes for used batteries.

Please do not dispose of batteries in residual waste, in nature or through any other unsuitable disposal route.

Why is proper disposal important?

Batteries and rechargeable batteries may contain substances that can harm the environment or human health if disposed of incorrectly. Depending on the battery type, these may include heavy metals or other chemical components.

At the same time, batteries and rechargeable batteries contain valuable raw materials such as zinc, iron, manganese, nickel, lithium or cobalt. Proper recycling allows these materials to be recovered and reused.

How should used batteries be stored safely?

Please store used batteries safely, in a dry place and out of the reach of children until they are returned.

In particular, for lithium-containing batteries and rechargeable batteries, make sure to avoid short circuits. The terminals should be taped before return if there is a risk of short circuit.

Damaged, leaking or swollen batteries should be handled with particular care and taken to a suitable collection point as soon as possible.

What do Pb, Cd and Hg mean?

The crossed-out wheeled bin symbol means that batteries and rechargeable batteries must not be disposed of with household waste.

For batteries containing certain harmful substances, the following chemical symbols may also be shown:

Pb Battery contains lead
Cd Battery contains cadmium
Hg Battery contains mercury

These markings indicate that the battery contains certain harmful substances and must be disposed of with particular care.
